Descriptions
The story begins when fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school and discovers two strange notes in her mailbox. Each one contains a single, powerful question: “Who are you?” and “Where does the world come from?” These questions spark her curiosity and soon she becomes deeply absorbed in mysteries that reach far beyond her quiet life in Norway. Through a series of letters, Sophie begins an unusual philosophy course that takes her from Socrates to Sartre, taught by an unknown teacher. At the same time, she keeps receiving mail meant for another girl named Hilde. Who is Hilde, and why do her letters appear in Sophie’s mailbox? To solve this mystery, Sophie must rely on the very philosophy she is studying—only to discover that the real answer is far stranger and more complex than she ever expected.
